For the fifth year in a row, Musical Bridges, Inc., a Vermont-based
non-profit organization promoting cultural exchange, is seeking
teachers of English to live and teach in Chita, Russia or in towns in
Chita Oblast for the school year September 1, 2001 through June 2002.
Chita (pop. 350,000) and Chita Oblast were closed from 1922-88 and
still have relatively little contact with the West. You would be
among a handful of Westerners living and working in the city and
oblast.

Two universities in Chita request teachers. Other sites may be as
teacher/consultant to the Aginsk Buryat Autonomous District school
district and the village of Ugdan, near Chita-city. The
teacher/consultants for outside Chita-city should be certified in
teaching ESL and have ability in Russian. Supplemental Russian
instruction may be required before going to Russia. (Teachers at the
universities do not have these requirements, as they will be teaching
intermediate to advanced students within high-quality English
departments.)

You would be employed by the host institution (or city) and receive
room and a standard teacher's salary from them. Musical Bridges
would provide a fellowship covering travel to and from Chita from
your home city in the U.S., medical insurance, visa costs and a
stipend.

This is an opportunity to see a part of Russia few Westerners have
ever seen, and to help an isolated and remote people desperately in
need of outside contact.

Requirements:
- at least a bachelor's degree or equivalent from an accredited
  institution
- ESL certification and ability in Russian for Aginsk and Ugdan
- articulate with good writing skills
- applicant must hold an American passport
- applicant must be age 21 or over
- applicant must be of sound physical and mental health to the extent
  that
+ the applicant is up to the rigors of travel and living in a remote
place and difficult culture with limited outside contact
+ neither hampers the applicant's ability to carry out the agreement
between the teacher and the Chita institution
We are looking for:
- initiative, maturity, ability to work independently, ability to get
  along
- imagination and creativity as they pertain to developing course work
and working in the classroom to achieve teaching goals
- adventurous spirit, wide mind and cheerful disposition
