The Alfred Friendly Press Fellowships (AFPF) announces its annual
competition open to non-U.S., mid-career, professional print
journalists from developing and transitional countries with an
emerging free press.
Approximately twelve mid-career reporters and editors - usually
between the ages of 25 and 35 -are selected annually to come to
America for a six-month, in-depth, practical introduction to the
professional and ethical standards of the U.S. print media.
Since 1984, AFPF has hosted 194 journalists from 70 developing
countries. An applicant must have an excellent command of written
and spoken English, early to mid-career status, with at least
three years experience as a print journalist, a demonstrated
commitment to a career in journalism in the home country, and
current employment as a journalist with an independent print media
organization in a developing or transitional country.
The Fellowship covers all costs of program-related international
and domestic U.S. travel, and provides a monthly stipend to cover
basic living expenses. The program begins in June with a two-week
orientation seminar in Washington, DC followed by five-month
deployment to U.S. host newspapers where Fellows cover local news.
Applications are due February 1 for the program beginning in June
of that year. For more information and/or an application, visit
