GREEN WALK UPDATE
The 3rd Annual Green Walk will be held during the period July 21 to August 11. REAP will have a combined group that includes Walkers, volunteers and school exchange participants. Also, persons interested in longer experiences can travel with REAP's earlier group, for a program from July 7 through August 11. Visit our website for more details on prices and terms. Final details are to be worked out in January-February 2001. The structure for the Walk will change significantly from either the 1st or 2nd Walks. While the final structure is to be determined, it was widely felt that there needed to be more control by local persons, including young people. The route of the Walk will be changed, and it will take place in different regions of Buryatia and Irkutsk. The upcoming Walk will have more walking and substantive projects. Meetings with local people will be more informal.
In the 2nd Green Walk we had a handful of participants from outside of Russia. This was a disappointment to many of our Russian participants and persons or youth organizations encountered along our route who wanted to meet foreigners and exchange ideas, etc. I urge you to join us for this reason.
With new Administrations in Russia and America, we expect conditions that will benefit from strong Activist Citizen Diplomacy. In 2001, the ingredients are present for a reversion to something resembling the 1980s, unless people give the leaders direction as they did a decade ago.
I will be providing more detailed information on the 3rd International Green Walk on or about February 15.
