I'm not sure how many CivilSoc subscribers have high-speed Internet
connections through DSL or similar "always connected" technologies.
If you do, however, your computer is probably vulnerable to being
hacked and your "privacy" is compromised.

A recent Walter Mossberg column in The Wall Street Journal described
two software programs that offer good protection in these
circumstances. BlackIce (www.networkice.com) costs about $40 and is
apparently very easy to install and operate.

The other, ZoneAlarm (www.zonealarm.com), is free to home users and
nonprofits and has more bells and whistles but is also supposed to be
a little more technical (i.e., complicated). I have recently tried
out ZoneAlarm and it seems to be very good indeed.

It's worth giving serious thought to such software in our
increasingly networked, and vulnerable, world.
