Project Editor/Coordinator, Transitions Online magazine
http://www.tol.cz

Prague-based Transitions Online magazine (TOL) is launching an
exciting new project to promote the content of newspapers, news
agencies, and other media outlets in the 28 former communist
countries we cover. Much of the content from independent media in
these countries does not get international exposure. This project
will allow our readers from all over the world to read on-the-ground,
locally generated news stories and features that would otherwise not
be available. The project would also contribute additional readers,
exposure, and hopefully advertising revenue for independent media in
the region. To accomplish this task, TOL is looking for an
experienced editor, who would be interested in working with a young,
dynamic staff to offer a large audience something unique.

The Project Editor/Coordinator will be an experienced journalist and
editor, with a minimum of 3 years work experience in the region
covered by Transitions Online. The ideal candidate will be a native
English speaker who is fluent in at least one of the languages in the
region, but non-native speakers who are fluent in English and have
proven editing skills will also be considered. Experience working for
a daily news outlet is a plus, as is a proven track record for
managing and organizing a large staff and following through with
strict deadlines. The candidate should also have excellent judgement
of news stories and a good eye for underreported features and
analyses.

The Project Editor/Coordinator would be resonsible for helping to
create, organize and launch TOL's new regional media partnership
program, which envisions: (1) establishing relations with reputable
media outlets in 28 former communist countries (2) working with the
editors of these outlets to get English-language feed for daily news
stories (3) working with TOL's stringers to find feature and analysis
stories from these same papers (4) editing short news items on a
daily basis and lengthy features on a weekly basis (5) preparing
daily and weekly submissions for posting on the TOL site.

The daily work week would consist of the following: (1) Monitoring
the partner outlets every morning for pertinent news stories, and
contacting the appropirate editors to recieve the necessary
English-language feed by 12pm Prague time. (2) Editing the five
stories, forwarding them to the copy editor, and posting them on TOLs
site with any art by 5pm Prague time. (3) Monitoring the partner
newspapers, with the assistance of stringers, for feature or analysis
stories (minimum 2 per week), assigning their translation, and
editing them for posting throughout the week.

The positions is full time and requires a dynamic candidate who is:
(1) forward thinking (2)highly organized (3) willing to work closely
with stringers to provide essential training (4) capable of meeting
daily deadlines (5) interested in the changing world of online
publishing (6) pro-active and capable of working independently and
with minimum
supervision.

The position is based in Prague. Salary based on experience and
committment. Benefits include insurance, 5 weeks paid vacation, and
the chance to work with the most dynamic and comprehensive Internet
publication covering Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia,
Russia, the Balkans, and the Baltics.

Interested candidates should send a resume and cover letter to
<jobs@tol.cz>.
