GUIDE TO FOREIGN FUNDING SOURCES AVAILABLE FOR UKRAINIAN NON-PROFITS
The Innovation and Development Centre (a Ukrainian non-profit organization) is pleased to present its new publication - the directory of foreign donor programs applicable to Ukraine "GUIDE TO FOREIGN FUNDING SOURCES AVAILABLE FOR UKRAINIAN NON-PROFITS" complited by David Koenig and Oleksander Sydorenko.
This is the second edition of such a directory that the IDC has been publishing since 1998. The first directory Funding for Civil Society: A Guide to U.S. Grantmakers Giving in Ukraine was jointly published with VOICE International: Voluntary Organization Initiative in Central & Eastern Europe/Eurasia. The previous directory had 25 entries and presented profiles of U.S. based grantmakers. The directory was warmly received by the Ukrainian non-profit sector and encouraged the IDC to compile a second edition including European sources of funding. Consequently, this edition was enlarged to 68 entries.
The directory includes not only foundations but also various governmental programs and international organizations tasked with assisting Ukraine as well as other countries in the region. Information regarding each organization, their program priorities and activities was checked for accuracy and applicability to Ukraine.
The IDC has included in the directory a short review of the essentials of proposal writing and a common grant application form that was developed by the U.S. National Network of Grantmakers which can be used as a general guideline for obtaining information and in what manner to approach foundations. This section as well as a glossary of funding support terminology has been reprinted from Funding for Civil Society: A guide to U.S. Grantmakers Giving in Ukraine (1998).
Some NGOs have raised concerns about the directory being published in English rather than in the Ukrainian language. Taking into account their concerns, the IDC reinforces that the guide is centered on international funders whose working language is English. Furthermore, during translation and project formulation processes materials translated from English to Ukrainian and then back to English often lose key meanings and/or result in miscommunication with a funder’s programming. Thus the competitiveness of Ukrainian non-profits with other organizations worldwide seeking the same funding is hindered. Therefore, from the IDC’s perspective, an English language directory provides a much more valuable and useful tool to enhancing the Ukrainian third sector.
The IDC would like to acknowledge the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation for providing continual support and assistance to the development of the Ukrainian third sector. Additionally, the IDC thanks U.S. Peace Corps/Ukraine for human resource support. Finally, the IDC would like to extend its sincere gratitude to all organization that took the time to carefully review and update programming information.
The IDC welcomes feedback concerning this directory or any other IDC publications. If you are able to identify organizations not included in this issue, the IDC will make every attempt to ensure that they are included in subsequent issues. Given the fact that organizations often offer specific and periodical granting programs, the IDC encourages all interested parties to subscribe to its bi-monthly publication - Crossroads Magazine to keep abreast of project announcements.
