Center for Safe Energy of Earth Island Institute seeks candidates for
position as BILINGUAL PROGRAM ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT.

The Center supports environmental organizations in the former Soviet
Union in the promotion of energy conservation and renewable sources
of energy.

Term of employment: Twenty-hours/ week beginning October 2, 2000 for
at least one year preferably longer.

Location: Berkeley, California. Candidates must legally reside in
the US with permission to be employed.

Salary: $1,000/month

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Program Administrative Assistant will
develop and maintain systems for the efficient functioning of a small
non-profit environmental agency, maintain financial records, manage
Russian language grant proposals and communicate in Russian and
English by email with environmental activists in many countries.

PRINCIPAL TASKS:

1. Organize and maintain office systems.
2. Prepare financial documents for the Earth Island Institute.
3. Perform data entry using English and Russian sources.
4. Make travel arrangements.
5. Perform translations: Russian-English and English-Russian.
6. Manage small grants program for non-profit organizations in
Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Russia.
7. Communicate with environmentalists in the CIS and the US in
Russian and English on program and administrative matters.
8. Coordinate proposal preparation for foundations and US government.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Excellent writing and verbal skills in Russian and English.
2. Experience with office systems, equipment, budgets and
spreadsheets.
3. Experience negotiating with airlines and travel agencies.
4. Computer literacy on PC programs: Excel, Quicken, Filemaker,
Eudora and Microsoft Word (familiarity with comparable programs for
Apple desirable).
5. Attention to details especially financial data.
6. Self-motivation and independence.
7. Interest in environmental and energy issues (desirable).
