CivilSoc subscribers may be interested to visit this Web site for the
Karelia region--http://www.karelia.ru/start.html. It is a very
useful resource for anybody interested in this northern region of
Russia which borders Finland, and once belonged to it.

The site has sections on business and the economy, society, culture,
education, religion, mass media, government, etc. The page for
society, http://www.karelia.ru/Other/index.html, has links to the Web
sites of more than 50 noncommercial and social organizations iun the
region. Among these, the pages for the Karelia chapter of the
Committee of Soldiers' Mothers is particularly impressive, but there
are many others that are very good.

There is also a link from this page to an online directory containing
829 Karelian NGOs, at: http://st.karelia.ru/~alexandr/org/

The site is mostly in Russian, but many pages offer English versions.
