Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies--A Centre for the Study of the
Islamic World

THE CHEVENING-OCIS SCHOLARSHIP
(Republic of Uzbekistan)
2001-2002

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Oxford Centre for Islamic
Studies are cooperating to provide a Scholarship during the academic
year 2001-2002 for a citizen of the Republic of Uzbekistan wishing to
spend a period of study in the United Kingdom as a member of the
Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies.

The Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies is an associated institution of
Oxford University and has links with universities and research
centres throughout the world. Its primary purpose is to promote a
more informed understanding of Islam and the Islamic world by means
of research and advanced study. The Centre encourages
multidisciplinary studies and its academic focus is not restricted to
any one discipline or world region.

The Chevening-OCIS Scholarship is offered to support study by a
citizen of Uzbekistan in any area of the arts, humanities or the
social sciences (particularly anthropology, economics, geography,
history, international relations, law, literature, philosophy,
politics, religion and sociology) which has relevance to the study of
Islam or the Muslim world. The Scholarship is intended to encourage
interaction among academics from various traditions of learning and
to provide the holder of the award with the opportunity to devote
their time to research and writing and to participate in the Centre's
academic activities.

Applicants would normally be scholars or writers at the post-doctoral
or equivalent level. Senior and junior faculty members are eligible
but an academic affiliation is not a necessary requirement. Selection
will be based upon the merits and significance of the applicant's
proposed or current research. Each scholarship provides a stipend,
for the payment of fees, living and travel expenses sufficient to
enable the holder to spend an academic year at Oxford. The age limit
for applicants is 40 years. Applicants will be required to have an
adequate standard of English.

Application forms may be obtained from and should be returned to the
Awards Secretary, Chevening-OCIS Scholarship, Oxford Centre for
Islamic Studies, George Street, Oxford OX1 2AR, U.K. Tel: 44 1865
278730, Fax: 44 1865 248942. The closing date for applications is
15th November 2000. Applications should include a curriculum vitae,
letters of recommendation from two referees familiar with the
applicant and a brief description of the proposed research project.
