To all CivilSoc members,
I am a young American who was recently accepted into the Peace Corps, and
will be leaving shortly for Kazakhstan to serve for two years as an
Environmental Education volunteer with the Corps. I have been informed that
my assignment may consist of teaching about English and environmental issues
on the high school or college levels, assisting local environmental NGOs, or
a combination of the above.
I am interested in obtaining information about resources--books, papers, and
especially Web sites--containing information about environmental education,
environmental and nature-related activities for young people, and
information on environmental, ecological, and resource-management issues,
particularly as they apply to Kazakhstan, Central Asia, and the rest of the
former Soviet Union. In particular, I am interested in sites (such as the
GLOBE program for environmental measurements) that might be available and
willing to become part of an ongoing relationship regarding environmental
information and issues. I am also interested in advice and recommendations
regarding ESL and teaching materials, especially scientific/technical
English.
I realize that this is a broad (!) request, and my time (and yours) is
limited, but I would appreciate any information that you have to offer, both
now and during my training in Kazakhstan this summer.
