Good day.
I am a former Peace Corps volunteer, and I recently returned from the
Kyrgyz Republic. A Kyrgyz acquaintance of mine was hired as a
regional representative by an NGO called the "Coalition for Democracy
and Civil Society." I was very interested in the work that she was
assigned, as it was an attempt to curb corruption in government by
informing villagers of their rights as citizens of a democracy, and
training them to peaceably force their government officials to make
local budgets transparent.
When I last talked with my friend in August of 99, she told me that
this coalition was an experiment of sorts, and that the only other
such "experiment" in democracy training was being done simultaneously
in a small village in either Lithuania or Latvia.
While in Kyrgyzstan, I was very concerned about the corruption that
so impedes the development of true and working democracy. I am
interested in tracking the progress of this "Coalition for Democracy
and Civil Society," and now that I am in the US again, I thought I
would have such information at my fingertips, but I am not able to
find a webpage that corresponds to that title, nor do I find any
information about encouraging democracy in the Kyrgyz Republic.
While searching, I came across the CCSI web pages, and I thought I
might take a risk and contact CivilSoc list members, in hopes that
you may have some information about the project.
I would appreciate any information you can give me, including that
which pertains to the same objectives in Lithuania or elsewhere.
Thank you so much for your time, and please respond directly to me:
