Job Opening: Publications Program Co-Editor, ISAR

ISAR: Initiative for Social Action and Renewal in Eurasia is a
nonprofit organization that promotes citizen participation and the
development of the nongovernmental sector in the countries of the
former Soviet Union. ISAR's offices in the US and Eurasia support
citizen activists and grassroots nongovernmental organizations in
their efforts to create just and sustainable societies.

The publications program co-editor helps to develop and produce
ISAR-DC's printed and electronic publications. The co-editor develops
and evaluates ISAR's public outreach strategy through publications,
events, and the Web site, as well as the ISAR membership program.
Responsibilities include:

Give & Take: The co-editor works in all facets of ISAR's quarterly
journal, Give & Take: A Journal on Civil Society in Eurasia. Together
with two other journal staff, the co-editor works on the publication
from conception to distribution. Regular tasks include:

- Developing long-range and outreach planning
- Editing, soliciting articles, and working with ISAR's seven field
  offices to solicit material from NIS organizations and writers
- Corresponding with writers and finding new contributors
- Communicating with the printer and mailing house
- Laying out the publication with desktop publication software
- Writing/Reading correspondence in Russian to potential contributors

ISAR in Focus: The co-editor is responsible for gathering
information from each ISAR office for the four-page quarterly
newsletter, ISAR in Focus, and for writing, editing and laying out
the newsletter.

Membership Program: The co-editor supervises the membership
coordinator, assists with the creation and implementation of outreach
strategies, and writes promotional materials. Experience with the
fundraising and fundraising software desired.

Web site: The co-editor works with the systems manager and Web
designer to coordinate public outreach, publications, and membership
activities. Strong candidates should have general comfort with
Macintosh computers. Experience with the Internet and HTML desired.

Job Requirements:

- BA in Russian and Post Soviet Studies, International Affairs, or
  relevant work experience
- Excellent writing, editing and communication skills
- Native English speaker
- Solid Russian language skills
- Strong Macintosh computer skills. Knowledge of Adobe Pagemaker,
  Adobe Illustrator, and Photoshop desired.
- Knowledge and interest in the former Soviet Union
- Knowledge and interest in international development and the
  nonprofit sector
- Work/Study experience in the former Soviet Union

Salary: Mid-20s, commensurate with experience.

Starting date: Mid-May, 2000
