The North-South Institute is pleased to announce the launch of its
newest publication: "The Canadian Development Report 1999: Civil
Society and Global Change."

Civil Society, the term used to describe groups of individuals which
are neither part of the public nor the private sector, is a force for
international change. Canadians, by working with and supporting these
agencies, play a critical role in providing basic services overseas,
promoting discussion worldwide, developing international networks,
monitoring governments and industry, and thus effecting global
change.

The Canadian Development Report 1999: Civil Society and Global Change
reviews the work of these many different organizations. Each chapter
is written by an expert on the topic, and focuses on a different
aspect of Canadian civil society in a global context.

How many of Canada's 175,000 registered charities devote all or part
of their time to international issues? Who are they and how are they
funded?

What are Canadian churches, NGOs, unions, service clubs, and
professional associations doing on international gender concerns,
international trade, development programming, hunger and food
security, conflict prevention and environmental protection?

Which organizations are leaders in their respective fields?

The Canadian Development Report 1999 answers these questions, and
others.

The book also offers a comprehensive set of tables charting the
movement of money, goods, and people between Canada and the
developing world.

New this year are lists of websites of civil society organizations
working globally.

The volume is available for CAN$35 and includes a complimentary
CD-ROM version of the report, which allows the statistics, tables,
and text to be downloaded for presentations, reports, and academic
papers.
