TITLE: Program Coordination Intern
DATES: Four months starting January 11
WORKHOURS: 20 hours per week
LOCATION: CSE Office in Berkeley: 2828 Cherry Street
SUPERVISOR: CSE Deputy Director, Enid Schreibman
STIPEND: $500 per month

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Program Coordination Intern will assist the director and deputy
director to organize, support and financially oversee three CSE
programs in collaboration with non-governmental organizations in
Russia, Kazakhstan and Ukraine. Funding has already been acquired
for the first two programs and is expected for the third.

1. In Russia: an education program for the public and regional
policy makers in seven regions on the problems of plutonium safety.

2. In Kazakhstan: a small grants program for women taking leadership
in non-governmental organizations.

3. In Ukraine: a training and demonstration project in energy
efficiency for non-governmental organizations and municipalities.

SPECIFIC TASKS

1. Communicate daily by email with activist partners in Russia,
Kazakhstan and Ukraine.

2. Coordinate CSE review of applications in Russian for grants to
women in Kazakh non-governmental organizations funded by the US
Department of State.

3. Make travel arrangements to and in Russia for American activists
and experts who will participate in hearings and conferences on
plutonium issues during May-June 2000. The task requires frequent
communications with travel agencies, with the Russian Consulate about
visas, with especially with American travelers and Russian hosts.

4. Facilitate communications for the collaboration of the cities of
Berkeley and Gorlovka (Ukraine) to design and acquire funding for an
energy efficiency demonstration in Gorlovka.

5. Maintain financial records for the Russian and Kazakh programs
including spreadsheet reports, vouchers, expense records, money
advances, reimbursements, etc,

6. Translate from English to Russian and Russian to English.

7. Perform general office duties including mailings, filing, copying,
ordering supplies, distributing information, and liaison with Earth
Island Institute.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Ability to read and write in Russian at advanced level.

2. Communication skills in spoken and written English.

3. Experience and competence with PC computers including programs for
email, MS Word and spreadsheets (Filemaker) as well as trouble
shooting ability.

4. Skill and comfort in handling financial records.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Russian as first language with at least two years experience in the USA.

2. Bookkeeping experience especially with non-profit organizations.

3. Motivation, self-confidence and independence in office work and
cross-cultural communication.

organizations in the former Soviet Union (FSU), to encourage safe and
efficient production and use of energy resources, to promote the
leadership of women in FSU organizations, and to facilitate
international collaboration among non-governmental organizations
concerned with the environment and social justice.
