TWENTY THOUSAND QUESTIONS TO THE CENTRAL LIBRARY OF EKATERINBURG

Ekateringburg. These days the Central Library's social service
reference telephone line "227-127" has marked a special anniversary:
the dispatcher has registered the 20-thousandth operational-call. The
social service reference line was created in May 1997. Initially it
was intended to aid pensioners with their questions concerning the
recalculation of pensions, concessions and the equipping of other
services and utilities. Today the dispatcher registers up to 40-50
phone calls a day.

The Central Library's information line differs in many respects from
other reference sources. First, its operators are experts in a
broad range of matters, whereas other reference lines have less
experienced workers. Second, operators do not give extensive,
complicated answers. If the operator does not possess the necessary
information, he/she will give the user the required help to find the
information elsewhere and in the case of elderly people will
personally ring round every possible service and organization.
