TO THE ATTENTION OF THE INTERESTED
The Center for Sociological Research at the Bulgarian MoD, Armed Forces &
Conflict Resolution Section at the Bulgarian Sociological Association,
BULERGOMAS, and the Center for the Study of Democracy, supported by Hanns
Seidel, Bulgaria, and Free and Democratic Bulgaria Foundations, are
organizing an international conference "NATO at 50: Public Opinion in the
East and West" to be held in Sofia, Bulgaria, on 24-27 June. We are about
to finish preparation of the conference program, but there is still
possibility to accept some last-minute applications from interested
researchers all over the world. The Conference will have two full working
days at the premises of the MoD-2, with a cocktail at the Center for the
Study of Democracy (fmr North Korean embassy), followed by a field trip on
26-27th after the conference to the former capital of Bulgaria, Veliko
Tirnovo, with visits to historical places and to the Military College, then
to Varna at the Black Sea (hosted by the Navy Coll.), and other places of
interest. Accommodation at the near-by Shipka Military Hotel and meals
during the Conference, and the trip, will be covered by the organizers;
there is also option for those who prefer to stay at 3- or 4-stars hotels
in Sofia on their own, with a shuttle transportation provided.
Unfortunately, we are not able to cover travel expenses to and from Sofia.
However, there is a number of applicants from E.Europe, who can't afford to
pay their ground (where possible) or air-trip fares, even more complicated
by the current NATO air strikes in neighbour Yugoslavia. We should need
between $750 and $1,000 for that purpose.
Sofia is quite a safe place these days, and we expect to have here a really
exciting academic event.
