In January 1999 the Danish Refugee Council published its
report entitled "Legal and Social Conditions for Asylum
Seekers and Refugees in Central and Eastern European
Countries".

The report aimed at providing detailed and comparative
information on the region's refugee situation. Fourteen
chapters of the report cover fourteen countries of the
region: Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary,
Romania, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, the
Russian Federation, Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova.

Each country chapter contains information on the asylum
determination procedure, social social rights for asylum
seekers, recognised refugees and, where relevant, persons
under temporary protection. Each chapter also gives some
country background information, thus helping to understand
refugee situation in a particular country. The report allows
for inter-regional comparisons, since it is organised along
a structure similar to the Danish Refugees Council report on
Western Europe issued in 1997.

The report is a result of co-operation between the Danish
Refugee Council and refugee-assisting NGOs in each country.
Contact information of co-operating organisations is
provided.
