Mission:

The CRDF is a private, non-profit foundation which was created on August
11, 1995 as an American response to the dramatic decline of resources for
science and engineering research in the former Soviet Union. The CRDF
seeks to address this situation by fostering opportunities for
collaborative projects between FSU and US researchers, by encouraging
productive civilian employment opportunities for former FSU defense
scientists, and by providing new opportunities to pursue these goals in a
framework of mutual benefit which promotes the values of democratization
and market economy. The CRDFs initial endowment of $10 million derives
from a $5 million contribution from the U.S. Department of Defenses
Nunn-Lugar program to promote demilitarization in the FSU, and from a $5
million gift from philanthropist George Soros to the U.S. National
Science Foundation.

Cooperative Grants Program:

In November 1995, the CRDF announced a call for proposals for its first
initiative, the Cooperative Grants Program. This program will allow joint
teams of former Soviet and U.S. scientists and engineers to apply jointly
for support of cooperative projects in any area of civilian research and
development.

Teams may apply for $10,000 to $80,000 of funds for a two-year period.

Applications are due March 1, 1996.
