Friends of Civil Society:
Some of you have perhaps seen a copy of our Internet Resources for the
NIS or Channels: A Guide to Third Sector Projects and Organizations
in the NIS, both of which were published by Center for Civil Society
International (CCSI) this past summer.
CCSI is presently revising both of these resources for an exciting new
book which will combine both Channels and Internet Resources into one
up-to-date, substantially expanded, yet inexpensive volume. It will be
published in association with the University of Washington Press in April
1996 and titled, THE POST-SOVIET HANDBOOK: A GUIDE TO GRASSROOTS
ORGANIZATIONS AND INTERNET RESOURCES IN THE NIS. Center for Civil
Society Advisor S. Frederick Starr, President of The Aspen Institute, is
writing a foreword to the publication.
The University of Washington's 1996 Spring Catalog, which will feature
THE POST-SOVIET HANDBOOK as its "lead paperback," will soon go out to
30,000 booksellers worldwide. The price of the book, which will be about
360 pages in length, will be only $19.95.
Thanks to research we have done in the past two-three months, we expect
that THE POST-SOVIET HANDBOOK will contain significantly more information
than we were able to include in the 1995 edition of Channels, especially
about a broad range of indigenous "third sector" organizations in the
former Soviet Union (Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakstan, Georgia, etc.)
We are especially excited about this forthcoming publication, since we
believe it will offer to many Western readers the first serious
introduction to the important activities of hundreds of democratically-
minded, socially active grassroots organizations--NGOs, professional
associations, advocacy groups, independent cultural groups, etc.--in the
countries of the former Soviet Union.
This message is to invite any organization in the former Soviet Union
which wishes to be considered for inclusion in The Post-Soviet Handbook,
to submit to Center for Civil Society International the necessary
information as soon as possible.
Your information can be as brief or as long as you like, but we reserve
the right to edit it if it is too long.
The key points of information we want to have are as follows. Not all
of it is necessary, but as much as possible.
1. Complete organization name
2. Address
3. Telephone number
4. Fax number
5. E-mail address
6. Name and title of contact person
7. Short history or background of organization, including year formed.
8. Reason for the formation of the organization.
9. Any significant accomplishments of the organization.
10. Current emphasis or focus of activities.
11. If possible, some objective measures of size: e.g, numbers of paid
staff or volunteers.
If you have information of this nature which you would like to send to
us, we encourage you to do so. But we need it BEFORE DECEMBER 31.
We would prefer to have your information in e-mail form, sent to:
However, you may also fax it to us at (206) 523-1974.
If you have questions, or if you need further clarification, please
contact me directly.
Thank you very much!

I posted a message a couple months ago looking for host families for Russian
high school students for next semester. Right now we have 73 host families and
80 students set to arrive in January, 1996, so if there is anyone out there who
could host, please drop me an e-mail. If you know anyone who might be
interested, please pass this message along.
Thanks.
