Update on Regional Press Competitions
The Eurasia Foundation

The first Eurasia Foundation Press Competition was held in Fall, 1994
in the four oblasts and three republics of the Central Volga region of
Russia. Organized in conjunction with the Russian Institute of Press
and Mass Media, the competition identified twenty outstanding newspapers
(from 72 applications) which received grant support totalling $223,000.
The newspapers represent a diverse geographical, topical, and stylistic
range. Winning newspapers are printed in Russian, Tatar, Chuvash, Mari,
and German.

The second Eurasia Foundation competition, held in the southern Urals
region of Russia and organized in conjunction with the Institute of
Humanitarian Communications (IHC) is currently in the review stage (59
proposals). Winners will be announced in late March.

The third competition, held in the Russian Far East and organized by the
Eurasia Foundation Vladivostok Regional Office in conjunction with the
Russian Far Eastern University Department of Journalism is also currently
in the review stage (33 proposals). Participating regions include
Primorsky Krai, Sakhalinskaya Oblast, Amurskaya Oblast, Khabarovsky Krai,
Kamchatskaya Oblast, Magadanskaya Oblast, and Sakha Republic.

The Fourth Eurasia Foundation competition, organized in conjunction with
IHC, has begun in Central Russia. Requests for proposals have been mailed
to 469 newspapers in Bryanskaya, Vladimirskaya, Ivanovskaya, Tverskaya,
Kaluzhskaya, Kostromskaya, Moskovskaya, Orlovskaya, Ryazanskaya,
Smolenskaya, Tulskaya, Yaroslavskaya areas. Press releases announcing
the competition were placed in 9 local newspapers on February 13-20.
Winners will be announced in mid-April.

The fifth competition is being conducted by Eurasia Foundation Saratov
Regional office in concert with IHC. Requests for proposals have been
mailed to 412 newspapers, covering Astrakhansky, Volgogoradsky,
Krasnodarsky, Rostovsky, and Stavropolsky regions. Press releases were
placed in local newspapers on February 20-27. Winners will be announced
end of April-beginning of May.
