The Institute was organized in March 1947 on the basis of the V.I.
Vernadsky Laboratory for Geochemical Problems and began activity as GEOKHI
on April 3, 1947 with Academician A.P. Vinogradov as its first director. After
World War II, the institute was involved in the area of atomic power
production. In addition to geochemistry and analytical chemistry here on Earth,
the Institute has become the one of leaders in the field of the Moon and
planetary research with the space era.
| SCIENTIFIC OR EDUCATIONAL MISSION |
The institution's activities include:
- Cosmochemistry, Planetology, Meteoritics
- Geochemistry and Mineralogy
- Biogeochemistry and Geochemical Ecology
- Ore Formation
- Geomorphology and Tectonics of the Ocean Bed
- Monitoring of the Environment Pollution
- Analytical Chemistry
- Radiochemistry
- Precision Instrument-making
