Volgograd, City and Region (formerly Stalingrad)
Volgograd is located in the south of Russia along the western bank of the
Volga, the longest river in Europe. The city, founded in 1589, was called
Tsaritsyn until the name was changed to Stalingrad in 1925, in tribute to
Stalin's participation in a battle following the revolution in 1917. It is
also famous for the decisive Battle of Stalingrad during WWII which
virtually destroyed the city. Home to the statue of Mother Russia on
Mamayev, it is the largest free standing statue in the world at 52 meters
high (over 171 feet).
