Where the Volga and the Oka Rivers meet, you will find Russia's third largest city in the region by the same name. Founded in 1221, the city has an interesting and long history of perseverance. Between the years 1932 and 1990, it was known as Gorki (Gorky, Gorkiy). Regardless of its name or spellings, it has been considered a major cultural and industrial city for many centuries. In recent years, it became famous to the world as the city where Andrei Sakharov, the famous Russian scientist and activist for democracy, was exiled.

The following is a list of sites describing the city and region of Nizhny Novgorod. Below these resources we have also listed resources that describe the smaller, less well-known towns of the region. Seven years of news. . . . .

Through an agreement with Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Friends and Partners maintains a seven year archive, updated daily, of their popular daily news service concerning the NIS and countries of Central and Eastern Europe. You can browse the complete news summaries of each day for the last seven years and you can search the entire archive by key word. A wonderful reference tool!
