MoscowFounded in 1147 by Prince Yuri Dolgoruki on the outskirts of Suzdar Principality, evidence has been found of 3,000 year old settlements within the city. Moscow was the capital of Russia from the latter part of the 15th century until 1713 when Tsar Peter The Great relocated it to St. Petersburg. However, in 1922 it once again became a capital but this time of the Soviet Union and then of Russia in 1991. The 850th anniversary was observed in 1997 with a large celebration. People all over the world know of the Kremlin but many do not know that the New Kremlin walls have been in existence since 1485 or that a huge fire burned much of the building in 1737. A few of the other world famous institutions and sites include St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow (completed in 1560), Cathedral of Christ The Savior (completed 1883) Moscow State University (opened in 1755), the Bolshoi Theater (opened in 1824), the Moscow Theatre (1898), and the beautiful Moscow Metro subway (completed in 1935). The following is a list of sites describing the city of Moscow. We hope this list will continue to grow as more communities become represented on the World Wide Web so please be sure to let us know if you are aware of any other sites.
