Healthy children will not fear life if their elders have integrity enough not to fear death. - Erick Erikson
Lake Baikal
The following is a list of sites describing Lake Baikal and the area
surrounding it. Located on the border of the Republic of
Buryatia and Irkutskaya Oblast
in Siberia,
this is not only the deepest lake in the world and the eighth largest in
surface area but also, one of the most fascinating.
With an average depth of 730 meters (803 yards or 2,709 feet), the deepest
portion reaches 1637 meters (1801 yards or 5,402 feet) making the volume of
the lake more than all five Great Lakes in North America combined
(Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, Ontario) and it holds almost one-fifth of the world's
fresh water. Made up of a diverse plant and animal life (1550 species and
varieties of animals and 1085 species of plant organisms that are known),
and breathtaking views, it is truly an astonishingly beautiful part of the
world.
We hope this list will continue to grow as more communities become
represented on the World Wide Web so please be sure to let us know if you
are aware of any other sites.
