                    A Business of One's Own
                       Galina Barkanova

When courses in the "How to Start Your Own Business" program for
women began, the program's organizers realized they had their work
cut out for them. That was a year ago. Then word about the
courses' benefits quickly spread--and today, there is no end to the
applicants wanting to learn the basics of market economics.

It was intended for the "How to Start Your Own Business" program to
train 100 young women from cities and towns all across
Karakalpakstan. However, while women from Nukus, Khodzheili, and
regions close to the republic's capitol showed interest in the
program, no one from towns such as Bozatau participated. This seems
to indicate the level of development of the market infrastructure in
these areas, and the encouragement (or lack thereof) that women
receive to study business.

Approximately 500 women-owned businesses are currently registered in
Karakalpakstan. However, the experiences of the Association of
Young Women show that the desire to start a venture isn't enough to
create an entrepreneur. Starting your own business is a complicated
undertaking, and a lack of knowledge and skills can be fatal. It
was for this very reason that the Association of Young Women started
the "How to Start Your Own Business" program in Nukus. Participants
in the program study the basic economic principles for running a
business and also obtain work skills. A second phase of courses is
planned [in 1998] in which participants will learn more about the
law.

While studying, participants in the program create business plans
for their future ventures. Successful completion of the coursework
and the business plan results in a certificate. The Association of
Young Women encourages women in the program to form small ventures,
such as drug stores, candy manufacturies, or seamstress shops, since
these types of small businesses have a better chance of obtaining
credit.
