General Maintenance Review Points
In addition to using the completed Weekly Playground Safety Inspection Record as a maintenance reference, consider the following inspection points:
- Are all bolts, screws and nails secure with none missing?
- Is the equipment free from protruding nails and bolts?
- Are all joints and connections tight?
- Are all wood surfaces and edges free from splinters?
- Are all wood items sound and free from decay and insect attack?
- Are there any missing boards, or ones that need replacing?
- Are the equipment pieces secure against movement - e.g. in secure concrete footings?
- Are concrete footings below the ground line?
- Is there any evidence of corrosion or rot of supports at ground level?
- Are metal items free from corrosion?
- Are all metal surfaces smooth?
- Are welded joints secure and free from burrs and rust?
- Are all shackles and bearings well lubricated and operating smoothly?
- Are all shackles and chain links in good condition (less than 10% wear on metal surfaces)?
- Are all sliding surfaces in good condition (metal, fiberglass)?
- Are all guardrails secure?
- Are drainage holes in tires free from water and debris?
- Are ropes sound and free from fraying, vandalism or signs of rotting? (Pay attention to attachment and anchor points)
- Is the ground cover checked daily to detect debris (e.g. broken glass)?
- Is the ground cover maintained at a depth of 8"-10"?
- Have all trash containers been emptied?
