COMBINED MASTER PLANNING CHARETTES

The Bosnia Network plans to host a regional charette in Alexandria, Va. in January 1997, in order to bring together the materials produced by participating urban design and regional planning classes. There, students and professionals will analyze the class projects, determine where new data fits into the larger picture of Bosnian reconstruction and what work remains undone, and help chart the course for future studies.

The Washington, DC area provided proximity for those participating schools located on the Atlantic Seaboard, and allows us to draw upon the large number of area specialists from the local relief, diplomatic and corporate mapping communities, whose input can help round out our profile of Bosnian infrastructural needs.

The other December charette is planned for Birmingham, a location central to Network schools in the Deep South. The Civil Rights Institute, a Network supporter, will be invited to host the gathering.

We are also seeking grant funding to send ten participating Network professors to Bosnia this summer. They will spend time with Sarajevan academics and travel to Tuzla, Mostar and Dubrovnik with local designers and relief specialists in order to view specific reconstruction targets.

This experience will broaden their understanding of Bosnia's overall needs and expose them to specific projects that might benefit from Network help.
