A Retail Nursery in Avondale

Location: Northeast corner of 3rd Avenue and 42nd Street South

Goals and objectives:

The growing of perennials, herbs and annuals for retail purposes would enhance the economy of the Avondale neighborhood. This nursery would provide employment for neighborhood residents such as retail growers, wholesale growers and nursery workers. The nursery would attract customers from outside the neighborhood, further increasing the equity of Avondale. Empty lots in the neighborhood could be utilized by the nursery to grow plants for retail. The nursery would be located adjacent to the proposed farmers market, and the two would both benefit from customers attracted by the other.

Suggestions:

• Place the nursery adjacent to the proposed farmers market on 3rd Avenue South.
• Include greenhouses on site for growing of potted plants for retail.
• Provide customer parking off the street, in the alley behind the nursery.
• Provide chain-link fencing around a section of the site for nighttime security.
• Provide a buffer evergreen hedge along the edge of the property that is adjacent to buildings.
