Neighborhood Alleys
Location: Alleyway west of 41st Street, between 4th and 5th Avenues South

Goals & Objectives:
To create an atmosphere of safety and comfort in the backyards of Avondale. By taking care of their our own backyards neighborhood residents can increase the equity of the neighborhood as a whole, from a property value standpoint. Such action also enables cultural extension of individuals through the landscaping of the yard, as the neighbors who walk along these paths interact with each other while passing by.
Suggestions:
- Buy plants from the local nurseries and farmers market to keep more equity in the community.
- Make the homeowners responsible for lighting and similar safety issues in their own back yards.
- Create a neighborhood compost bin for use in each of the alley gardens and for possible resale to a composting lot in one of the neighborhood's proposed urban nurseries.
- Keep the entrances simple and unmarked by street signs. Those who will use the alley will be the ones who live along it, so they won’t need directional aids, while visiting pedestrians to the park and commercial areas won’t be interested in walking down the alleys.
- Create a sense of privacy with a living fence composed of vines and chain-link fencing, as well as with low hedging.
