Dear John:

(1) Many thanks for your msg (ATTACHMENT I
) in response to Reference (a) above.

(2) Your questions #1: ÒList = email distribution list?
Ó

YES, it is, as what this list distribution is now doing.

(3) Your questions #2: ÒStart date?
Ó

Almost immediately after I received the following letter from the US Department of Commerce on April 6, 1982;

<http://tinyurl.com/l56wp8>

This de-regulation was emulated in other countries since then, to have more than 1.5 billion email users around the world nowadays.

My saga of coming to this point was described in the Sections 1.2 to 1.5 of the Reference (b) above.

(4) Around that time of April 1982, there was the world first e-learning course held by the Western Behavioral Science Institute in La Joya, CA, as using the Electronic Information Exchange System (EIES) of the New Jersey Institute of Technology. I was fortunate to take the course with a scholarship.

The students gathered in La Joya for one week. A half day session was assigned to each lecturer who described the outline of his course.  After that gathering, we scattered around the US, and started conversing each other on the lecturerÕs subjects.  One of the lecturers was the President of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Bolder, CO, (Walter Roberts), who was the former President of the American Association for Advancement of Science (AAAS). We had very active dialogues, e.g., my question to him why the air circulates counter-clock-wise around low pressure and otherwise for the high pressure in northern hemisphere, and the other way in southern hemisphere (*), and my invention of a very complicated equation of the relation of the latitude of New York City with the timing of sun set at spring/autumnal equinox, etc.

(*) Walter could not answer in few phrases — if anyone knows any answer to this question, pls reply to me.

After lively sessions for one month with him, next lecturer started his course on global economics. However, alas, none of students dared to raise any questions nor dialogue. This was because the lecturer was from the Royal Dutch Shell Oil Company in London, and could not attend the one week gathering in La Joya because of his business trip elsewhere, and students were hesitant to speak out without seeing him face-to-face at the gathering in La Joya.

(5) This may related to a famous cartoon appeared in New Yorker around the time when Internet was opened to public in early 1990s. In it, a daddy dog was sending an email msg at the front of computer, and said to puppy dog who was standing nearby him, ÒIn Internet, no body knows you are a DOG!!Ó

(6) The lessons learned from these are;

(a) Face-to-face mtg is still very important — particularly to have a workshop to start any serious project;

(b) Need to indicate authenticity of msgs — as I always include full addresses in my list distributions.

(7) The above are my thoughts about the use of email.

Keep in touch.

Best, Tak

Tak Utsumi: Your list as the world longest running list

Tak Utsumi:
Your list as
the world's longest running list

> a World Bank officer once said that our list is the world longest running list

That distinction would be something that could be turned to advantage in attracting and engaging people, organizations, advocacy, activism, and I'd be happy to check around with other potential candidates for that distinction -- questions that come quickly to mind include:

List = email distribution list?

Start date?

Looking forward

If you need anything else, about the above or anything else, let me know.

If this email message leads to any useful or interesting results, I'd be interested in hearing about it.
