(06/22/09) Call for Proposals - Conflict and Environment Nexus of the Center

Dear Josie,
I think that there is surely room to include that kind of reflections into the
research proposal. In fact, I wrote the conceptual framework of the project in
close cooperation with the Landau Network (http://www.centrovolta.it/landau/),
of which the major interest is just the link to the broader conflict/security
dimension. I'll speak to them and I'll try to submit a proposal before the 30
June.
I'm taking this opportunity
to attach a paper related to environmental security in Kenya, which is one of
the outputs of our lab at the University of Milan. I think you all may find it
interesting.
Thanks again for your
support.
All the best,
Simone

Call for Proposals - Conflict and Environment Nexus of the Center for
International Conflict Resolution (CICR) at Columbia University
Dear Simone,
Many thanks for your interest in the fund for Global Environment and
Conflict Resolution. I believe a project which looks at the impact of
climate change and food security would be very interesting to the
Selection Committee. If you can link this then more directly to the
potential impact on internal pressures and dynamics (population movements,
increasing tensions etc), linking broadly with the conflict(s) there, it
would be even more interesting. Is this what you had in mind? Given that
you are also linked with the University of Milan, I think this could be of
great interest to both CICR and the Italian Ministry for Environment, Land and
Sea.
The deadline is the 30 June which is short. Do you think you will be able to
get something brief to us by then? There was a mistake in some of the calls
that were sent out, as it did not include a methodology section in the
proposal request - please ensure that you include something on how you
intend to carry out your research (ideally it should contain both a desk and
field component, with specific information how you will conduct your field research - ie. data
collection, surveys, workshops, interviews etc) as well as the other elements
listed in the proposal.
We look forward to receiving your application. Do not hesitate to contact
me for further information.
Warn regards,
Josie

Dear
Takeshi,
many thanks for your message. I have read the Call for Proposals with great
interest. Given its geographical target, I see potential synergies with
one of our researches at the Geomatics Laboratory (Faculty of Agriculture,
University of Milan). In fact, we are going to start a
research/cooperation project in Lebanon in Fall 2009: this project will
particularly look at the possible impacts of climate change on water (Al Assi
and Hasbani-Wazzani rivers) and food security.
I think that this CICR Call could offer a good chance to conduct some (broader)
research before moving into an operational framework in 2010. Josie, let me
know if this sounds feasible for you (here below you can find my contact info).
Unfortunately, there is no match with the activities ongoing in FAO related to
Communication and ICT for climate change adaptation (by the way, the donor is
the Italian Ministry of Environment even in this case!).
Thanks again for your e-mail, Takeshi.
All the best,
Simone
