Dear Pietro:
(1) Many thanks for your informative msg (ATTACHMENT I) in response to the Reference (c) above.
Dear Dula:
(2) Many thanks for your msg (ATTACHMENT II) with a wonderful seasonÕs greeting card;

<http://tinyurl.com/79mf2p>
Merry Xmas and Happy New Year to you, too!!
Dear All:
(3) DulaÕs requirements are — see ATTACHMENT I of Reference (c) above;
1. CPU:
a)
processor type:- 64-bit Intel xeon processors 5300 series or 64-bit dual core
power 5+ with clock speed of each processor 3.2 GHz
b) number of processors (CPU) =10
1. RAM: 32GB
2. Hard disk: - recent technology
3. operating system: Linux -Fedora
(4) PowuaÕs availabilities are — see the 4th para of ATTACHMENT I below;
1. CPU:
16(cpu)
dual core Intel Xeon 5130 2.0 Ghz, 1033 MHz bus installed on 8 machines
1. RAM: 8 Gb of RAM on each of the machine
2. Storage: Up to 1 Tb of storage which can be made
permanent upon request.
3. Operating system: Debian GNU/Linux 4.0
Dear Dula:
(5) You may ask Pietro to run a test case if one of your simulation would run
on his system, and if so, to find out the suitable size of Powua system for
each of your branch offices.
Dear Pietro:
(6) As you know, the simulation outputs are heavily graphic intensive, and have
to be sent to nearby local TV stations for their broadcasting.
This means that each of Powua cluster mini supercomputer have to be located in
the local branch offices of the Ethiopian National Meteorological Services
Agency, which will have broadband Internet connection with their local TV
stations.
I am afraid if those
TV stations are currently connected with broadband Internet to receive the
graphic intensive simulation results from the Powua at your office in Milan,
Italy.
You may then come up a rough estimate of the configurations of each of those
mini supercomputers in cooperation with your colleagues at Xteque srl.
Dear Dula:
(7) I am very happy to hear that you are now preparing a concept paper to
describe the background and justification of your project.
In addition to the items I requested in the Reference (c) above, you may start
considering the construction of the action plan — of course, including
the fund raising for the entire weather forecasting system in Ethiopia, too.
(8) About the leadership course, you may ask Marina, since she organized an
excellent seminar last summer;
(a) (06/08/08) (1) UNESCO Chair, (2) 10th Global Leadership Forum, and
(3) T. Utsumi's presentation

Dear E-Colleagues:
(9) If you know any leadership course (preferably e-learning one), pls inform
it to Dula with a copy to me. Thanks in advance.
Best, Tak

Subject: [gu-new] (01/05/09) Powua for local meteorological forecasting with
GUS/Ethiopia and some possible emulation to Bangladesh
Dear All.
As you may have read on our website http://www.powua.com, Powua is a
Debian GNU/Linux based cluster on which are installed and configured a number
of software applications. At the moment the list of available apllications is
relatively short, but we plan to grow it as soon as we find new resources for
our project.
Powua is made available to researchers from all over the world through the
Internet: each user decides how many CPU he/she needs and for how long. At
chosen time the cluster is configured just as requested for exclusive use by
the user who reserved it. A storage area to save user's data is available up to
five days before and after the reservation.
Powua has been developed by Xteque srl, a start-up company still with limited resources
and continuously in search of new fundings to provide an always improving high
performance computing service to the biggest number of researchers to allow
them realize their projects.
For sure Mr. Dula can rely on our infrastructure: we could provide him with
16(cpu) dual core Intel Xeon 5130 2.0 Ghz, 1033 MHz bus installed on 8 machines
with 8 Gb of RAM each. We can also provide up to 1 Tb of storage which can be
made permanent upon request (differently from what happens for
Powua standard users).
A few more technical details: all nodes are interconnected via 1Gbit dedicated
ethernet; storage is provided via distributed filesystem from a fiber-channel
attached SAN; we are using 64 bit Debian GNU/Linux 4.0, but other distributions
could optionally be used via chroot.
What we would need now is a list of the software products used by Mr. Dula;
once we receive it, we will check if they are already available on Powua and if
necessary our technical staff will be at Mr Dula's disposal for installation and
configuration.
We would also kindly need to know when and for how long Mr. Dula is going to
use Powua's computational power.
Once installed and configured, new applications will be made available on the
entire cluster so that if Mr. Dula or others will need a greater computational
power, we will be ready to provide it.
With our best wishes for a happy new year and looking forward to establishing a
successful collaboration,
Best regards
Pietro Nocita
