Happy New Year
Dear Professor Utsumi,
Thank you for the kind compliments. Though not an expert in these,
to me, those stories and legends that are the substance of zen,
haiku and the tea ceremony are a rich and inspiring legacy that
I hope continue long into the future.
Happy and prosperous New Year!
Bill

Dear Bill:
(1) Many thanks for your wonderful msg.
It reminded me of many legends and stories that Japanese feudalistic warlords
in ancient time indulged in Zen, Haiku, Tea Ceremony, etc.
(2) Your haiku is excellent, indeed!!
Wishing you a very peaceful, healthy, happy New Year!!
Best, Tak

Subject: Christmas haiku
Dear Professor Utsumi,
By serendipity, I discovered the work of Jean Paul Lederach, a seminal figure
in peace building and reconciliation. There are many important ideas in his
work.
In his book, The
Moral Imagination: The Art & Soul of Building Peace, which was immediately resonant to my concept
"moral vector", he wrote: ³I have found that transformative moments
in conflict are many times those filled with a haiku-like quality that floods a
particular process or space.Å He suggests working with the art form as an
exercise and discipline.
Taking inspiration from one of his stories of a Tajik warlord and a philosopher
who brought peace to their area, I gave my first effort at haiku. I am sure you
know the art better than I but in the spirit of Christmas, I send you these
thoughts and my wish for that spirit to increase through the world this year.
Warlord and teacher
as one, change spear to brush balm
on Lifes torn canvas.
With respect and admiration for
your work,
Bill Runyon
