I browsed it with great interest — it is certainly excellent voluminous
(167 pages) document, indeed!!
BTW, I regularly receive a newsletter on this subject from the Pan-American
Health Organization (PAHO), which you mentioned in this document.
Dear
Linda:
This may be of your interest, too, since you organized a similar workshop at
NYU hospital in the summer of 2006, just prior to our trip to Siberia.
Dear e-Colleagues in e-health/telemedicine field:
This
is certainly a comprehensive compilations of almost all of information
resources about this topic around the world. I am sure that you will find
it very valuable.
Dear Pablo:

I am very happy to know that your career path is similar to mine, -- though I
was educated as a chemical engineer compared with yours as a chemist, and then
computer, Internet and e-learning, etc.
Your LinkedIn profile <http://www.linkedin.com/in/pisanty>
is very impressive.

(5) As reading your msg of ATTACHMENT IV, I recalled an episode appeared in
TIME magazine.
When President Reagan took the White House, his first photo as relaxing with
his foot on his desk in the Oval Office appeared in the TIME magazine.
A few weeks later, I then found a Òletter to editorÓ from a teacher in Kyoto
City, the ancient capital of Japan where customs, traditions and rituals are
very much cherished as following the Japanese imperial court. It said
ÒMr. President, please do not put your foot on your desk!! My elementary
school children start imitating your pose, and this is very BAD manner
according to the Japanese custom.Ó
I thought this was the very legitimate request to the President of the United
States of America, the most powerful person of the world.
At that time, I also noticed a plaque on his desk, which said something like
ÒYou can have a maximum freedom if you do not seek any return to what you have
done good to others.Ó With this, I ranked him as one of the great
presidents of America, and this might be similar to your fatherÕs deed.
ÒFreedomÓ is the most precious commodity on earth.
Best, Tak

I did not realize you were interested in teh medical field, i think you might
find this an interesting study that roxanne and i did. It has very useful
links that work for those in emergency management and preparedness with some
emphasis on medical areas.

"Social
Mission" in medical field
Tak, Utsumi-san, Sensei,
I have been deeply moved and touched by your narration of your father's
story as a doctor and other parts of your childhood and youth.
As it happens, my father was a doctor too, in Mexico. He immigrated as a
small child with his parents; his father died when he was about 15 and my
grandmother managed to put her two sons through medical school with great
difficulty. My father studied Medicine in the fateful years of 1939-1945
though fortunately our country was not hit by the war as yours was.
My father did his mandatory social service (this is a
Constitutionally-mandated half-year of service to society for all
professions in Mexico) in a small, isolated town in the mountains of
Western Mexico, a place of poverty, isolation, and other troubles like
drug-cultivation even at that time. He did well and good for the
community. Many years later some of his former patients would still send
all the way to Mexico city presents like crates of mangos, live turkeys,
and an occasional venison leg. My father died when he was 58, in 1978, and
I was 25.
I went into Chemistry and then into computing and the Internet and over
the years I found that I had to strive for my work to be of such benefit
to people as possible in my father's model, not for wanting the presents
or the gratitude, but indeed to achieve measurable, identifiable benefit
to those who are on the receiving end. I've tried to do that in the
University and particularly until recently as its CIO and leading other
projects on the Internet. A high, almost unachievable standard. You are in
a stronger position because of the deep philosphy which you have absorbed
from the centuries-old culture of Japan which you so much appreciate.
If reading your emails is often interesting, this one in particular really
hit a sensitive nerve.
Yours,
Alejandro Pisanty

Tak,
if any of the mayors are in my region I'll be very glad to contribute! We
run out of UNAM, the National University of Mexico, a VC network with
about 550 classrooms in the country, and connect to regional networks in
Latin America with which we work quite regularly. Most of our links are
through academic networks so costs are extremely low. We connect to the US
and to Europe directly.

Alejandro Pisanty
