Book Launch: Globalization and Environmental Challenges
Dear
Colleague,
On behalf of the United Nations University (UNU) Office in New York, we are
pleased to invite you to a book launch and panel discussion, on the volume: Globalization
and Environmental Challenges: Reconceptualizing Security in the 21 st Century. The event is scheduled to take place
on April 22nd 2008,
from 3:00 to 6:00 pm in Conference Room 5, at the UN headquarters, New York.
The book launch will be highlighted new concept by contributions by
assessing the global reconceptualization of security triggered by the end of
the Cold War, globalization and manifold impacts of global environmental change
in the early 21st century.
The book addresses the global reconceptualization of security in the 21st
century in response to the end of the Cold War, the process of globalization
and the processes of global environmental change resulting from climate change,
desertification and water. In 2007 the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate
Change (IPCC) has addressed climate change as an issue of utmost importance
that requires extraordinary policy responses. A year ago, on 17 April 2007, the
UN Security Council for the first time addressed climate change as an issue of
interna-tional security, the UN General Assembly and the Secretary-General
stressed its utmost im-portance for the future of humankind. Speakers will
include:
ð Hans GŸnter Brauch, Editor, Free University of Berlin
and UNU-EHS, chairman of a scientific NGO on Peace Research and European
Security Studies(AFES-PRESS)
ð JŸrgen Dedring, Professor of CUNY and NYU
ð Marc Levy, Earth Institute, Columbia University
The book launch event will provide an occasion for presenting this new concept,
testing the hypotheses of the book, and engaging the experience of the audience
as well.
Thank you for your consideration; we hope you will be able to join us.
