Subject: [african_distance_education] Infor Request: EGY-Africa meeting in
Boulder Colorado

Dear Colleages

On March 4 there will be a meeting of a group of people from
several countries including Ethiopia, USA, France, Australia and
Canada. The members are from Electronic Geophysical Year, with a
task to identify means to improve the internet infrastructure for
advanced scientific research in Africa. This group meeting is a
follow up of the space science workshop in Ethiopia. The group is
charged to organize its first workshop on the issue sometime this
year in Senegal. There will be an extended online meeting after the
March 4 meeting. Dr. Alem Mebratu of Mekele University will come to
the meeting representing the EGY-Africa secretariat. I am the chair
of the EGY-Africa compoent of the meeting. The talks on Africa will
focus on internet infrastructure for advanced scientific research
and education, encompassing K12, Undergraduate and Graduate
education. The meeting will also deals with shaping and coining the
problem in such a way that its solutions impact the developent
priorties for a typical subsaharan university. In order to
adequately represnt the interests of individuals scientists and
higher education enterprises, your participation is
critically needed. Assuming that funding is not an issue, Please
help in the following area

1. Other than funding what are the hinderances and limitations to
conduct advanced scientific research ? Please focus your response on
internet infrastructure.
(Computer hard ware and software, speed and bandwidth (internet 2) ,
ISPs, the need for a dedicated and exclusive computing
infrastructure for univerities etc)

2. How can these hindrances can be removed ?

Developed or underdeveloped African universities are doing great
research and education. They must be impowered. I am aware of the
heavy investments on the issue. I am aware of the efforts of ECA,
EU, USAID and others to improve accessibility. I am also aware of
the literature. However it is better to evaluate the impacts of
these investiments from faculty and student. When you respond please
identify your county, your name and the name of your institution

Please reply before March 3, please copy your messages to me at
abkebede@gmail.com

Abebe
