Dear Murray:
(1) Very Happy New Year!! -- albeit very belated.
(2) My wholehearted congratulations to your retirement!! -- referring to your
msg (ATTACHMENT I).
You have made tremendous contribution to the global e-learning with the
Electronic Information Exchange System (EIES), since I met with you for your
demo of its predecessor (which was made for the wage-and-price control of the
President Nixon and which was the world first computer mediated conferencing
system) in the attic of the Executive Office of the President in Washington,
DC. It was right after we saw the demo of the ARPANET of packet-switching
technology (which was the forerunner of Internet and which was invented by Dr.
Paul Baran (*), one of strong supporters of our projects for many years) at the
International Conference on Computer Communications (ICCC) held at the Hilton
Hotel in October of 1972. Those events completely changed my life
afterward, as extending its commercial version to Japan in early 1980s, de-regulating
the Japanese telecom policies for the use of email, etc., etc. -- the rest in
history.

See Section X-1 ÒOrigin of Packet-switching TechnologyÓ in <http://preview.tinyurl.com/b475v>
and Internet
Pioneers, Paul Baran <http://tinyurl.com/yrjbom>;

(3) I also greatly appreciated your
EIES service while I took the e-learning courses by the Western Behavioral
Science Institute of San Diego, CA in early 1980s, which was said to be the
world first e-learning program.
(4) One of the World Bank officers once said that our list (which started in
the mid 1980s with the EIES) is the world longest continuously running list on
discussing about e-learning, e-healthcare/telemedicine, global collaborative
R&D, etc.
(5) It is said that life is more valuable after retirement. I hope you
will continue your outstanding contributions to the world of learning and
hence the ÒnetworkedÓ WORLD!!
Pls convey my best regards to Roxanne.
Dear Stuart:
(6) Many thanks for your msg (ATTACHMENT II).
Dear Kaisa and Tapio:
(7) Referring
to the attachment of StuÕs msg, you may attend;
The
World Universities Forum
Davos, Switzerland, 31 January to 2 February 2008
http://universitiesforum.com
After all, your Finland was ranked as the world #1 by DAVOS Forum in education
and vocational training. Thus, you should have been invited to this forum
as one of panelists.
(8) I also strongly suggest that you visit StuÕs following web site;
<http://www.gwu.edu/~umpleby/academic/index.html>
And then, pls retrieve the following very interesting papers;
(a)
Umpleby, S. and S. Shandruk, ÒTransforming the Global University System into
a Resource for Social Improvement,Ó July 30, 2003
<http://preview.tinyurl.com/yo7bw8>
(b) Umpleby, S., K. Mekhonoshin, and Z. Vladimirov, ÒA Global University For
A Global Village,Ó
May 7, 2007
<http://preview.tinyurl.com/2yu7qh>
They may be good references to your ÒFinnish Noblesse Oblige Project for
Paradigm Shift and Change the World ProjectÓ for global economies into
knowledge-, network- and innovation driven economies, -- about which I will distribute in my
next list distribution.
Dear Stu:
(9) You may keep your eyes open to KaisaÕs forthcoming project, since what she
and our GUS are aiming are not only transfer of knowledge with global
e-learning, but also transformation of world society and humanity, i.e.,
paradigm shift from the industrial age for narrow and egoistic material wealth
to new innovative knowledge economy with immaterial wealth by globally
collaborative virtual empowerment. I think that it is in the higher dimension
than ÒAcademic GlobalizationÓ you talked about. I will upload the outline
of her project to this list next time.
Meanwhile, I greatly appreciated to read about your ÒService LearningÓ in your papers, since this is the
same direction of KaisaÕs project.
Best, Tak

Subject: Fwd: World Universities Forum, 31 January - 2 February 2008
I am sending this note to people previously involved in the Electronic
Networking Association.
There is still time to submit a paper to the conference
below. It
is rather expensive, but the topic looks interesting.
Lately I have found that the term "academic
globalization," which I
first heard during a lunch with Nagib Callaos, seems to make more
mental connections for people than the terms "global network of
universities," or "global university system," or the earlier
"electronic world university." Judging from the people with
whom I
now write papers, we have arrived. See
http://www.gwu.edu/~umpleby/academic/index.html
Best wishes, Stuart

Dear Colleague,
This is the final call for papers for the:
The World Universities Forum
Davos, Switzerland, 31 January to 2 February 2008
http://universitiesforum.com
The World Universities Forum was created in the belief that academe
must better engage today's most crucial questions, and that higher
education itself must be included as part of the wider discussion of
global change. The Forum encourages the participation of university
executives, administrators, scholars and research students, as well as
journalists, policy makers, business and political leaders, and others
who understand that the importance of the university extends well
beyond campus.
The World Universities Forum will feature plenary sessions by some of
the world's leading thinkers and innovators in the field. including:
Dato' Abdul Razak Dzulkifli, Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Sains
Malaysia, Penang, Malaysia; Brenda Gourley, Vice-Chancellor of The
Open University; Souad Halila, University of Tunis and Sousse,
Tunisia; Linda Katehi, Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic
Affairs at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, USA; Teresa
A. Sullivan, Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs
at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA; and Pavel
Zgaga, Professor at the Faculty of Education at the University of
Ljubljana, Slovenia - a key player in the 'Bologna' process creating a
common framework for European Universities. For further details, take
the Main Speakers link on the conference website.
All presenters may choose to submit written papers for publication in
the fully refereed Journal of the World Universities Forum. If you are
unable to attend the Forum in person, virtual registrations are also
available which allow you to submit a paper for review and possible
publication in the Journal, and provide access to the online edition
of the Journal.
We are also making available a limited number of free registrations
for graduate students who are willing to assist at the conference, and
people from developing countries. For details, take the 'Options and
Fees' link at the conference website.
To submit your proposal, please visit the Submit Proposal link on the
Forum website, http://universitiesforum.com
The final deadline for submission of proposals is 10 January 2008.
We look forward to receiving your proposals and hope you will be able
to join us in Davos in January 2008.
Yours Sincerely,
Professor Fazal Rizvi
