It was certainly our great pleasure to have met with you again since we met at our workshop at the University of Tampere in August of 1999.

(2) Following slides may be of some interest to you;

NOTE TO THIS SLIDE:

A new world has arrived in which computer and communications technologies will transform the national and global economies into information-driven economies. This is triggering the Information Revolution, which will have political and societal impacts every bit as profound as the Industrial Revolution.

á       The 19th century eliminated wilderness via railroads.

á       The 20th century developed science and technology which many say has allowed the planet to fall apart and fragmented along tribal and sectarian lines.

á       The 21st century is viewed as one that will implement the mass-enlightenment, which will integrate us commercially and culturally as a New Information Civilisation.

NOTE TO THIS SLIDE:

Economic interdependence among nations and cultures is spawning a global economy.  Globalization also highlights clashes of divergent cultures and belief systems, both political and religious.  If global peace is ever to be achieved, global-scale education, with the use of the modern digital telecommunications, will be needed to create mutual understanding among nations, cultures, ethnic groups, and religions.  The Internet is the future of telecommunications and can be a medium for building peace.

Slide rule to digital computer; Circuit switching telephony to packet switching digital telecom -- necessary to have Òmind-change,Ó particularly of bureaucrats as Machiavelli once said almost a half millennium ago.

á       Raw material of industrial age was tangible, the raw material of knowledge age in the 21st century is IN-tangible.

á       There is NO economic theories for the New Economy.

á       Dr. Kaisa Kautto-Koivula of Nokia said in her paper in our recent book that ÒThe biggest barrier for new development of Human-Centric Knowledge Society is our Industrial Age mindset!Ó

á       Creativity is the province of Homo sapiens.  We live for future, not in past.  Science and technology open the future.  However, the application of new technology often meets with ÒCreative DestructionÓ -- the famous words by Joseph Schumpeter.

á       Here needs good understanding of traditions and culture, and strong belief in scientific and moral principles.  This is because the interchange of creativity makes possible an international understanding and mutual appreciation that can lead to global peace.

NOTE TO THIS SLIDE:

Information society is based on the packet-switching technology, which principle is sharing.
Knowledge society is based on the GRID technology, which principle is collaboration.
Sharing and Collaboration are the essential principles to attain global peace.

(3) As I said in the list distribution of the Item (1) above, Finland is now the world No. 1 in education and vocational training, which was ranked by DAVOS Forum.

Thus, Finland can be the leading country with vision based on sound moral, which everyone is longing for.

This is why I am eager to have English and Japanese translations of books by three parties.

I shall then look forward to receiving your brief concept paper for the fund raising of this task.

Hello from Hisae to you.

Best, Tak

Dear Tak,

I apologize my slow response to your letter concerning Japan-Finnish Cultural Bridges. I have been on the road most of time during last days.

Let me first tell that it was really a great pleasure to meet you and your wife face-to-face after so many years. It was like meeting the persons I know already very well. Even if we have not met so often I have been able to share your thinking of the better future weekly via your e-letters.

It was also really a great pleasure to be able to give you personally our newest book - even in Finnish - "from Hiredman to Master": Free from the Leash of the Quartal Economy". The main message of this book is to describe the imbalance of ongoing society/economy, the expectations of future and the ongoing big barrier or paradigm shift from the Industrial economy/society to the new age of even epoche.

We as the authors of that book believe that the global economy & societies are facing now a really deep transition phase both in economy and society - maybe bigger than many of us have understood so far. We deeply believe that the successful future of human kind will be much dependent on the forerunner societies - those that have the right wisdom and foresight to see the right steps towards future. We believe that in this transition phase we are moving from the material wealth more towards the immaterial wealth. And we hope that Finland and Japan could be the forerunners of this paradigm shift.

Tak, I am greatful for all your advices to facilitate the opportunity to translate our book to Japanese (as well as the two other important books: 1) Klaus Oesch: "Virtuaalinen voimaantuminen" and 2) Dahlman-Routti-Yla-Anttila: "Finland as a Knowledge Economy: Elements of Success and Lessons Learned"). I believe that these three books represent different but relevant views, that will support to find the right steps for the paradigm shift from Industrial Society to New Human-Centric Creative Knowledge Society.

According to your advice I will contact Tapio and Klaus and we will together consider the right way how to produce the inquiring concept paper to you for the Japan Foundation.

I will appreciate all the support from the various persons you mentioned to make the translation of this/these books from Finnish to Japanese coming to true in future.  I believe that this kind of cooperation can be an important cornerstone for building even deeper cultural bridge between Japan and Finland in future.

Let me close this letter by telling how much I enjoyed also those moments in Tampere meeting. You could even touch the great feeling between the participants. And I believe that this great Japanese-Finnish art/music was the best key to open many hearts - mine too.

Tak, Finally please tell my best greetings to your wife. I appreciate that moment I could share with her. Wisdom for the future!

Best Regards
Kaisa
