Dear Chris, Charles, Alfred and Philip:

(9) As discussed, the workshop in Sierra Leone is to have stakeholders from the countries of The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) <http://www.ecowas.int/> so that they would create their own GUS in their countries — see;

the Creation of Global University System (GUS)
in Ghana and later in Countries of ECOWAS

This was prepared for the meeting of the Director-General of Kofi Annan Center in Ghana with the high official of the ECOWAS — with my hope that each of the ECOWAS would create their GUS.

Dear E-Colleagues:

(10) There is a similar movement with a planned workshop in Ethiopia in the next November — see ATTACHMENT I
below.

Dear Abebe:

Many thanks for your msg of 10/7th.  I took the liberty of attaching your msgs.  I would be very happy if we can be of any help to your project.  LetÕs work together after I come back from Turkey on 10/26th.

Greeat idea,

Can we begin with a forum annoucement that sounds like the one posted at

http://www.physics.ncat.edu/~michael/adla/index3.html

This is a working document. After we develop this document we can invite your contacts to participate. Once the contacts are established we apply for grants at NSF. The idea is very simple, create two consortia of universties
One in Ethiopia, the other here in the US. And drive the curricula via what an electronic campus (International Open University of Africa) or International Open Colege of Ethiopia. It will be a big organization but since this is global we can dream a lot.

Thank you for the information below. I see clearly the opportunities here.

Abebe

Dear Abebe:

(1) Many thanks for your msg.

(2) I would think that the first thing is to find out the need of the participants, and then to set up facilitator network and learner support system.

For this, I would suggest that you organize a planning workshop in Ethiopia.

(3) From my previous trip to Ethiopia, I have contacts at the following organizations there;

(a) Addis Ababa University, Addis Ababa,
(b) Admas College, Addis Ababa,
(c)
Amhara Region Education Bureau, Bahir Dar, Amhara Region
(d)
Bahir Dar University, Bahir Dar,
(e) Debub University, Awassa,
(f) Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation, Addis Ababa,
(g) Gondar College of Medical Science, Gondar,
(h) University of Gondar, Gondar,
(i) Infra Net Technology, Addis Ababa,
(j)
National Meteorological Services Agency, Addis Ababa,
(k) UNESCO, Addis Ababa

(4) Pls visit the Section V-A-4 of <http://tinyurl.com/b475v> for an example for creating GUS/Sierra Leone.

Pls also visit the Section V-C-1 of <http://tinyurl.com/b475v> for an example for creating GUS/Altai Mir in Siberia - I just came back from Novosibirsk and Gorno-Altaysk in Siberia for the fact-finding and assessment trip of this project, which was funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) through the Eurasia Foundation.

Pls feel free to utilize any part of them for constructing your concept paper for fund raising - we can work on it together.

(5) My wife and I are invited to universities in Turkey from 10/16th to 30th for creating GUS/Turkey.

Looking forward to receiving your next response soon,

Best, Tak

Hello Profess Utsumi

Thank you for the great links. I am very pleased with motivation of creating such a system. I am very interested in developing a virtual college/university that uses partially or fully curricula of major universites, deliver these curriculula using multi media and internet to developing countries. Of curse the collaborating univesities will decide on customizing the curricula according to the needs of the paarticipants.

I envision for example a cosortium of universities in a developing country (example Ethiopia) as clients of  a cosortium of universties here in the US (Columbia, Cornell, MIT, Duke, UNC etc)

The potential curriculua include information technology, health care, agriculture, and very high end institutes to support high end research in these countries.

My group and your croup can collaborate to write planning grants to establish the consortia oron both sides of the Atlantic.

I do believe such project is fundable via USAID, NSF, and similar agencies in other coutries.

Sincerely,

Abebe Kebede
