P. Tapio Varis, Ph.D., Professor <tapio.varis@uta.fi>

Dear Aaron:

(1) Many thanks for your msg (ATTACHMENT I) in response to my following previous list distribution;

(03/07/06) Invitation: Why is Finland the Most Competitive Economy in the World?, Thursday, March 9, 2006, 6:30 p.m., Embassy of Finland
http://makeashorterlink.com/?C240623CC

I am very glad to hear from you again.

(2) You may invite Tapio Varis for his speech on our Global University System (GUS) project at the annual congress of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (Nobel Peace Prize recipients) in Helsinki, Finland, on September 7-10, 2006.

Tapio is a world renowned scholar on peace and intercultural education.

If Tapio cannot make it, I may replace him — but with provision of full travel expenses.

In my youth, I was educated by fanatic Japanese militarism as sending suicide (Kamikaze) bombers (two to three years elder to me) to Okinawa battle field from a secret army air base in my home town Nagano Prefecture.  My high school principal encountered with Hiroshima Bomb, but never said any remorse, yet taught us tolerance and compassion of Buddhism.  My US education and experiences taught me the value of human right and democracy.  These experiences are the very basis of my motivation to create the GUS.

(3) When you meet Mr. Akiba, the Mayor of Hiroshima, next time, pls convey my best personal regards — I gave him a copy of our book when I met him by your kind introduction at Columbia University seminar last May 6th;

Global Peace Through The Global University System
Tapio Varis - Takeshi Utsumi - William Klemm (Eds.)
University of Tampere, Finland 2003
ISBN 951-44-5695-5
The entire contents of this book can be retrieved at;

(4) About Nobel Peace Prize: I was very gratified when I heard from Ms. Jody Williams (1997 Nobel Peace Laureate for her work for the banning and clearing of anti-personnel mines) at a conference in Taipei, Taiwan several years ago, that her worldwide movement was effectively made with the use of email — see my saga on the deregulation of the Japanese telecom policies for its use with Mr. Yoshio Utsumi, the DG of the International Telecom Union (ITU) in the first half of my following paper, which was emulated in many other countries as having more than one billion email users around the world nowadays;

"Globally Collaborative Environmental Peace Gaming"

(5) You may invite Dr. Martti Ahtisaari, former President of Finland — about whom I mentioned in my previous list distribution of the above.

You may also ask Oscar Arias, the newly elected President of Costa Rica and the Nobel Peace Laureate.  Tapio is a good friend of him since Tapio was the Rector of the United Nations University of Peace in Costa Rica.

Wishing you a very good luck to your conference,

Best, Tak
