Dear Ksenia, Roger and Tapio:

(1) Many thanks for your msgs (ATTACHMENT I
, II, III and IV).

Dear E-Colleagues:

(2) References to my following previous list distribution;

(05/24/05) Schedules and URLs of the multicasting videoconferencing on May 26th

This can be accessed at the URL mentioned at the top of this msg.

This multicasting videoconferencing was held on May 26th at the occasions of the following conferences;

(a) ÒMedia Skills and Competence ConferenceÓ at the University of Tampere, Finland
<http://www.uta.fi/conference/mediaskills/>
and
(b) ÒKnowledge Society Challenges for e-Learning
Ó at the Kaunas University of Technology in Lithuania
<http://www.distance.ktu.lt/vim>

(3) I am very happy to report you that our event was highly successful with the use of broadband Internet — at almost free of charge.  It was possible thanks to the extraordinary efforts made by many people, as connecting the followings;

    1. CorStar, Inc., New York,
    2. Green Sphere, Inc., New York,
    3. Houston Community College, Texas,
    4. Kaunas University of Technology, Lithuania,
    5. Taganrog State University of Radio Engineering, Russia,
    6. University of Helsinki, Finland,
    7. University of Tampere, Finland.

The video streams were sent to a bridge at the University of Helsinki which re-distributed to other participating locations.  The video and audio were also accessible at the webs located at CorStar, Green Sphere, Houston Community College, and the University of Helsinki.

We at Green Sphere accessed the web at the University of Helsinki and received superb quality audio and video.

Dear Prof. Baniulis, Tapio, Elena, Roger and Ksenia:

(4) Many thanks for your excellent and very impressive presentations.  Your video, audio and slide presentations came out very well.

Roger:
Thanks also for the photo of mine you captured during the session which is attached to this distribution (filename: helsinki1.doc).

Dear Frank, Roy, Bob, Airina, Donatas, Tiina, Ville, Sami, and Oleg:

(5) Many thanks to you, too, for your providing complete technical support and coordination to this event.

We really appreciated VilleÕs introduction to Sami who kindly provided us with his bridge — without it, this event was certainly impossible.

Oleg, sorry you could not connect at that time due to some fire incident in Moscow, but I am sure you can connect next time for Dr. AvetisovaÕs presentation.

Pls tell her that I took the liberty of uploading her following very interesting paper with Ksenia to our web together with my last list distribution mentioned in the Item (2) above;

Avetisova, K. and K. Avetisova,
ÒProblems of Reforming the System of Higher Education in Russian Federation based on forming the Key Competences of the Technical University Graduate
Ó

Dear E-Colleagues:

(6) Significance of this event was that anyone around the world could receive such high quality video/audio at anywhere, if they had broadband Internet without much difficulties and costs — even at a bus stop if it is covered by the so-called ÒcloudÓ of broadband WiFi connection.

I conducted many ÒGlobal Lecture Hall (GLH)Ó multipoint-to-multipoint, multimedia interactive videoconferencing spanning around the globe once or twice every year over a dozen years since late 1980s — see Chapter 2 of my following draft book;

ÒElectronic Global University System and ServicesÓ
http://www.friends-partners.org/GLOSAS/Bookwriting/Contents_of_Book.html

These GLHs were made mostly with analog satellite broadcasting approach.  The participants and viewers had to come to well equipped viewing room with studio, satellite dish antenna and tranceiver at nearby universities.

YesterdayÕs event showed that such expensive and inconvenient approach is now completely unnecessary.

(7) A snag was about showing PowerPoint slides.

For example, when my slides were inserted between video stream of me, the characters on the slides were often fuzzy or burned out, especially when they were shown on a conventional analog type TV screen.

This was circumvented at Tampere as showing audiences the slides (which I sent to them before) with a PC and a projector in a separate set-up, in parallel to the video they received from New York.

Frank, then suggested that we should produce such video stream with High Definition TV (HDTV) format next time, which can be shown on the computer screen.

Anyway, audio and slide are the more important than video for e-learning, and computer screen has higher resolution than TV screen.

This fact can be seen in RogerÕs web site in ATTACHMENT III
.  RogerÕs presentation was also superb, as using both video and slide presentations through two separate web sites — in a sense, showing the future direction of videoconferencing for e-learning.

In other words, we need digital broadband Internet — and this is why we are putting our efforts to create GUS in various developing countries for e-learning and e-healthcare/telemedicine.

(8) This need of digital broadband Internet would become more prominent when GRID networking technology with distributed computer simulation system would become the next phase of Internet development for e-learning to foster the creativity of youngsters around the world for promoting mutual understanding among them and hence global peace — see;

(9) Many thanks again, all presenters, coordinators, and tech support people, for your wonderful contributions to this successful event.  Hope see you again at a similar event next time.

Best, Tak

This may interest you, we are doing a fourth version of this workshop 4 June:   http://tc1.hccs.edu/hist/yr04/titlev/  Particularly the list of "Demonstrations" clickable fromt the left side menu will interest you, real media streams playable on MAC, they show the kind of content that can be (easily!)  created to go across the internet with today's tools.  I call particular attention to this link relating to mathematics instruction:  http://tc1.hccs.edu/hist/yr04/titlev/jacky/jacky_work.htm click the bottom link, "three consecutive streams".
