Japanese use Kanji (Chinese character).

It is pictorial, and some sociologist says that the society which uses pictorial character for their language tends to be feudalistic.
Western societies use alphabets.

Oriental societies are feudalistic, with emphasis on Truth, Goodness, and Beauty. They are "BE" society, artistic, and group society.

Western society is democratic with emphasis on Freedom, Equality, and Justice. They are "DO" society.

Joseph Campbell said in his book "Myth to Live By" that "Creativity happens only in western society."
Communication in oriental society is often synchronous -- Japanese communicate even with "stomach to stomach talk" -- without speaking out any words. Westerner's communication is often asynchronous -- as lawyers debates at court.
