Women's Human Rights Step by Step
Application Form
Application Deadline: May 18, 1998
We are in the process of selecting participants to the Women's Human
Rights Advocacy Training Project. The training program, which starts in
July-August 1998, will only be for the participants from the following
countries:
Cluster A:
- Georgia
- Kazakhstan
- Kyrgyzstan
- Ukraine
- Uzbekistan
Cluster B:
- Bulgaria
- Croatia
- Czech Republic
- Macedonia
- Albania
Please read the attached description of the project and criteria for
participation.
The Women's Human Rights Advocacy Training is designed to enable a core
group of women in each of the participating countries to:
- Appreciate the relevance and importance of human rights law and
mechanisms
- Know how to use the human rights system at the national, regional and
international levels
- Acquire skills in methods of documenting and reporting violations of
human rights
- Design advocacy strategies that can be used to promote women's human
rights.
The program consists of three one-week training sessions over a period
of two years. Participants will plan and implement at least one
organizational strategy to promote or defend women's human rights in
their countries of origin. Between training sessions, the training team
will offer follow-up advice, feedback and technical assistance as needed
in the implementation of these strategies.
WLD International will provide the training drawing on its staff and
network of international experts in the field of women's human rights.
The curriculum will be based on the Women's Human Rights Step by Step
manual, with the key thematic areas covering:
- The main concepts of human rights law
- The structure of the human rights system and how to access and use
selected human rights mechanisms
- How to develop strategies that promote or defend women's human rights
- How to investigate and document abuses
Due to limited space, only 5 participants per country will be able to
participate in the first training. The attached application form will
help us determine who can meet the qualifications for participation. We
request that you complete the application form in English.
Selected participants will receive funds from the Soros national
foundation in their country for travel costs including airfare/train
fare/bus, local transportation, visa costs where necessary, and a $150
per diem. Hotel accommodations and meals will be provided by the
Network Women's Program. A modest stipend for work following the first
training will be jointly provided by the Soros national foundations and
the Network Women's Program.
Please answer all the questions in the application survey and return it
with three copies to the Soros national foundation in your country by
May 18. See the contact information for the Soros national foundations
at the end of this message.
